Part of the 520 Day Reverse Exchange, for [personal profile] plingo_kat!
Rating: G
Length: 1.7k words
Summary:

Zhao Yunlan puts his detective skills elite squad delegation skills to good(?) use.

Because it's just been that kind of week. Many thoughts head empty would like to become one with the nearest sofa cushion except it's too hot lately for that, etc. I haven't even gotten around to last weekend's 天赐 episode yet, except for that absolutely feral 算你狠 performance (though to be fair, I have watched it… well, a lot more than once……)

Also, I do need to get my gif folder under control at some point, that pest is reaching almost 30GB at this point because I refuse to delete my PSDs. (Fortunately I do have the storage to spare on my laptop, but still.)

In the meantime, various bits and bobs from earlier this week:

Re-bearified version of the banner I made for the 520 reverse exchange at [community profile] sid_guardian, because Bears.

GIF of Shen Wei showing a sketch of a bear over video call, with the flashing subtitle text: hashtag BEARS in all caps

Zhou Shen gifset ft. blue gradient and overlays for week 3 of the March gif challenges – technically my first time Doing Colours On Purpose, and of course I had to make my own life difficult by trying to coherently combine gifs from 5 wildly-different-colouring videos. See comparison under the cut )

I don't often do draft versions of gifs these days, short of extremely elaborate layouts (…so basically that CM intro set), but it was called for in this case. (Tangentially, a fun read on the topic of white balance and colouring!)

On-the-commute-home-phonefic (or the opening three paragraphs thereof) owing to discussions on the Guardian server, which I have since realised could fill the DCU square on my bingo card if I could trap writing!brain back long enough to finish it out:

snippet: aw, shen wei, no )

Because it has been raining all day here – a positive thing, in my book! Except for the laundry problem it creates.

Anyway, a(nother?) go at several-things-make-a-post-ing, miscellaneous life updates edition…

  • Won't make a full Zhou Shen post this week because my attention span is in short supply, but I'll probably end up posting about his new song anyway because it's so good! On a related note, I shared my 380-videos-long playlist with a fellow fan on Tumblr and they actually finished listening to the whole thing, wow. Even I haven't done that in a while! It's really long!!
  • Spent some time last evening reading through old(ish) fics off an AO3 kudos email, which is always fun between the fact that I forget fics once I'm done posting them and said fics being obviously tailored to my own interests. Highlights: Pokemon fic, all three ATLA fics, a whole bunch of fics for FMAB (the one where I fail to cut Alphonse a break and the one where I do it again) and FMA 03/CoS (this 3-sentence-ish collection, a brief crossover with the MCU because SSR!Elrics, and not actually a crossover but Ed as the Man in the Tan Jacket), post-series fic for [tumblr.com profile] ink-splotch's Leagues and Legends trilogy, and the TPN timetravel AU that I never quite finished but still like a lot.
  • So many interesting comments on the translation post! Replies to come once my brain returns back online and functional, but I'm also tangentially entertained by the realisation that I've actually never quite engaged with translation meta/theory as a thing in itself? Which is atypical of the way I usually approach things (i.e. search the stuffing out of it) but then again I didn't actually start out intending to Do Translation, so. Wouldn't even be inaccurate to say I started doing it by accident, really.
  • Guardian-related: Three fics done at [community profile] fan_flashworks (and my own tag, yay!), a small scene discussion idea rattling around the back of my brain, and the extremely vague "what if Zhao Yunlan walked into the vibes of FMA 03's ending" concept lurking even further into the shadows.
  • Devoted several hours today just whacking away at technical exercises for the data visualisation software we use at work, which was a refreshing challenge because I only get to use it for routine stuff at work 90% of the time despite being for all intents and purposes the subject matter expert in my division.
  • Very non-committal watchlist: 大侦探 S7 now that it's started airing, these two math videos, the mini-episodes for Project Sekai and In/Spectre… and I still haven't gotten around to more of Reset…

A KNIFE!! On a Roomba! Because why not. The adventures of Stabby deserve to exist in all possible universes, space or otherwise, and you can't tell me Zhao Yunlan would not like to cause chaos in this way.

Challenge #6

In your own space, Create something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Decided to put those subscriptions to fic prompt comms to use by doing a Guardian drabble for [community profile] 100words, linked below!

A lot of what I write is in the several-hundred-words range by default, but it's been a long while since I really restricted myself to exactly 100 words so this was a nice challenge. I'm definitely out of practice at sticking to a particular word count – this idea kept wanting to expand into the 200-word range even while I was beating it down with a mallet. Behave, you gremlin.

(Admittedly I also had a more recent run of writing one-tweet-length (i.e. 280 character) fics during my stint in The Promised Neverland fandom, but I'd argue writing that sort of micro-fic is its own kind of beast entirely.

And come to think of it, the last time I did drabbles regularly was on [livejournal.com profile] 100wordstories when I was exploring around LJ, so it's nice to come full circle I guess? Definitely an instructive experience, judging by how I do semi-often get comments about how much story and/or worldbuilding I've managed to cram into the little amount of fic real estate I use.)

( fic: look at your life, zhao yunlan, look at your choices )

…I may actually convince the anxiously spinning top constituting 85% of my brain to regain some measure of sensibility, i.e. stop refusing to write fic anywhere besides Tumblr drafts or Discord messages. Neither of which actually has an auto-save function, with a bonus very very short character limit on the latter just to spice things up, but alas. The meatsack does what it wants.

On the other hand, all that rattling around did actually give me a long(ish) idea to work with for once, which is nice for a change! And I got enough of it drafted on the train to and back from work that I'm actually hopeful on the odds of finishing it maybe this weekend. Once I paper enough of this over for a semi-hanging-together-plot, at least…

ETA: Hilariously I may have accidentally thought of a brilliant solution to this – i.e. changing Atom's colours to match Discord's. It's definitely a fresh feel, let's see how well it works…

Challenge #3

In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some favorite canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Really, you might as well ask if the sun likes to rise. Admittedly much-earlier me used to do only the occasional canon-divergence back when I cared more about complying to canon, but these days literally anything goes. Pretty much the only kinds of AU concepts that I'm "eh" about are cases where the setting is overly specific in a way I don't care for (solid pass on college or high school AU, doubly so if it's extremely Americanised) or that I simply don't see the point of (as someone who's been known to question what difference an otherwise-canon-ish soulmate AU makes). For crossovers, I tend to prefer some kind of fusion between the universes rather than straight up mashing all the characters together. Unless it's a crack scenario, in which case collide away.

Anyway. Highlights of variously-implausible AU things I have committed in full seriousness:…and that's nowhere near an exhaustive list, just the more recent ones. I write a lot of AU, to put it mildly.

And a final obligatory mention to my longstanding vendetta against coffeeshop AU. Anyone's guess how much in jest that is by this point.
presumenothing: (shen wei)
Which was always bound to happen once I finished the show, given… pretty much everything about it, but in typical brain-pinball fashion this also means the neurons have gotten overexcited and zoomed off in too many directions at once. Not great for actually finishing anything, tbh, but hopefully recording bits of it down will straighten things out at least.

Also that "maybe" is technically inaccurate since I've already posted these two ficlets of Murderbot AU and literal-spirit-of-the-city!ZYL respectively, the further adventures of which are also *gestures vaguely* somewhere in this brainsoup.
