[sticky entry] Sticky: obligatory pinned post!

Found me! The name's presume, pronouns are she/they, and I write fic (among other things).

My output consists almost solely of short gen fics in various flavours of canon-adjacent or AU, which also means there's far too many individual fics to list in any sane manner. Fortunately for all concerned, I'm actually fairly consistent about crossposting albeit sometimes later than sooner to AO3 [archiveofourown.org profile] justjoy; the recent works list is also a good indicator of which among my rotating door of fandoms has been eating at my brain lately.

(At time of writing that answer is Guardian/镇魂 in both show and novel form. Zhao Yunlan's ridiculously red Jeep holds a special place in my heart. Other topics I am eternally happy to talk about: Zhou Shen, writing, giffing, and Chinese language/translation thoughts!)

I've mainly been active on Tumblr [tumblr.com profile] presumenothing – started exploring around DW as a in-case-of-apocalypse backup, but as you can see I've actually been using it quite a bit, shock and surprise. So feel free to say hi on this post if you're dropping by! Praise my use of actual punctuation and capitalisation for once! 0/10 too OOC, believe me, I know.

Friending policy: I may not grant access unless we already know each other and/or have spoken before, but I rarely lock posts anyway, and subscriptions are open so feel free!

Images: I do post gifs here pretty often, but will generally include image descriptions and avoid anything with strong flashing effects – let me know if they become an issue anyway.

Comments: Long or short, emoji or keysmash, old posts or new… my inbox is open! I do try to reply within reasonable timeframes, except when the Words Machine just breaks sometimes. You know how it is.

Me? Writing fic in Chinese? In the year 2022?

Clearly more likely than you think, and solely to be blamed on ZS-adjacent The Truth brainrot. It's enjoyable enough (with admittedly some degree of annoyance re: not being able to write at my usual speed) and I've gotten a fairly gratifying level of response on Lofter (aka Tumblr-equivalent, for those lucky enough to not have fallen down this rabbit hole before) so that's fun.

Otherwise, nothing much to update aside from extensive yelling about the solo Douyin concert from earlier this month

which I managed to catch most of live!

Also:

10/10 adorable. That is all.

Instructions unclear, couple months have passed??

Unordered list of things as they come to mind:

  • Got my official promotion letter just this week (and lots of congrats messages from colleagues, which is nice) and a pay raise before that as part of a company-wide review, so I guess that's pretty much my work goal boxes ticked for the year?
  • Alas, now that we're attendng things in the flesh again, work also means I have to go on my first official trip later this year, but admittedly there was never any helping that. (I don't like travelling for the most part, if that's not obvious.)
  • Trip last month concluded without incident, and definitely much less mishaps than if we'd scheduled it even one week later, so I guess we lucked out in that regard.
  • Neighbourhood cat has been amenable to headpats of late, at least when I do manage to spot it en route.
  • Frankly this past however-long has been just Bad for the attention span in general, but the brain gremlins got back onto the giffing train lately. Always nice to have a reason to zen mode focus on details with zero stakes at play.
  • Almost caught up with 开始推理吧 after casually binging it over the past week (having got stuck in the early cases re: above on attention span) and I like it even more than I thought I would! Which was already a fair bit, given both the ZS content and similarity to 明侦, so that was a nice surprise. And yes, I am now tempted to gif more of it.
  • I've also been watching a fair bit of 世界ネコ歩き in a mix of CN subbed and without – bonus points for being both 癒やし系 and good practice.
  • Pretty much everything else watched lately has been as a side effect of someone else in the house watching it, of which only 3年A組 stands out for the acting and strategic trope usage.
  • Other media consumption: both Hungry Hearts Diner games, a Thief of Time reread, and so much ZS content. I need to update my song playlist with all the new stuff, on that note.
presumenothing: (cheers)

Borrowing off [personal profile] nnozomi's rec game – reply with a number between 1 and 436 and I'll give you the corresponding vid off my Zhou Shen playlist!! (Which is, yes, a whole 436 vids long XD)

ETA: This is also running on Tumblr with extra commentary! All the songs ahoy.

Part of the 520 Day Reverse Exchange, for [personal profile] plingo_kat!
Rating: G
Length: 1.7k words
Summary:

Zhao Yunlan puts his detective skills elite squad delegation skills to good(?) use.
presumenothing: (zs meigui)

But first, the performance that has been single-handedly getting me through the past two weeks:

So good. So infinitely loopable.

Anyway. Unordered fandom-and-adjacent list:

  • Finished my 520 exchange fic just in time! For a given definition of the word, in that it is complete but I'd still like to add a few paragraphs to round out the corners if brain permits, which is a chancy prospect.
  • Casually watching TLTR with a generous amount of skipping (I am considerably No at horror-type suspense vibes and also the pacing in this show needs a pacemaker of its own) while sending [personal profile] elenothar unhelpful observations about Wu Xie and literal debugging. (He's definitely got a point about hugging pillars, though.) Also I suspect this is the kind of thing which I'd enjoy (even?) more in book form, but we are, ha ha, not touching that with the ten-foot pole that is my lack of attention span.
  • Note to self: watch the Pokemon anime more often, it's good brain-empty fun.
  • As with a definite large fraction of my Tumblr dashboard, I'm also subbed to Dracula Daily but see above note re: attention span, so mostly I'm just absorbing it secondhand via textposts and memes. There are worse rides to be on.
  • Also participating in a NIF group read (well, reread for me, aside from the revised starting chapters since I went with the original ones last time). Doom, thy shadow is long.
  • Words cannot adequately express the extent of both my (a) LOL-ness at 2/4 things mentioned above being Chinese-media-I-am-consuming-in-Chinese (I say this often but it's still true, seeing as I spent most of my life convinced that my use for anything aside from conversational usage would end with graduation) and (b) fizzy-brain pleasedness at having the correct language set to consume the things I'm interested in more-or-less in the original (kind of self-selecting by nature, but still – awfully convenient, good job past!me).
  • The 生米 mood of the moment is knowing he's on 2 ongoing shows (天赐 and now 奔跑吧) and literally not having the brain for more than clips + photos but being delighted anyway. I'm definitely gonna miss it when 天赐 is over and with it my stream of weekly new performances and vlogs, he spoils us with this content.

Miscellaneous life-and-work updates: )

presumenothing: (cheers)

Or: decided to be annoying today and remind everybody on any platform that it is My Birthday!! Yay me!!

Which I don't do, usually, because I've never been much inclined to celebrating things anyway, but I suppose this is as good a year for it as any. Not that there hasn't been *vague gesture* a lot of shit going down at work and home, but at least there's some good things both recent and upcoming to brighten it up. And of course I get my free long weekend between Labour Day and Raya holidays, so that's always cool.

Anyway! Here's to hoping for a good year fannishly as well, in terms of both ideas and the time/energy to do them in. Speaking of which, bit early for it but I haven't thought about 929 this year yet…

Because sometimes one is in the mood for something just slightly interactive. Mostly just small narrative-based games? Probably. Patience is a variable and mysterious thing.

April

Also, mandatory mention for [tumblr.com profile] ink-splotch / [archiveofourown.org profile] dirgewithoutmusic's Stay? if you haven't played it already (though a few hours are recommended to do the story justice and also here is the post-game fic I couldn't help writing for it).

Thank you mysterious person for the upgrade!

Armed with which I immediately had to make full use of [personal profile] naye / [personal profile] glymr's Guardian mood theme, of course 🌟

In which the last of the gif challenges meets me free-associating after spotting this super neat tutorial:

Large square gif with off-white textured background and the character 巍 in shades of blue, mimicking layers of paper with curved edges. Three scenes of Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan fade in and out in sequence, and the pinyin 'wēi' is shown below in dark grey between square brackets

Or, more importantly: DALABENGBA ANNIVERSARY DAY!!

( Gifset on Tumblr )

Truly iconic. So much so that I'm just gonna drop the video upfront, because this would be my submission for "things you'd like the whole world to witness At Least Once" – BUT if you're sensitive to flashing (especially red/blue) lights, check out the audio-only version instead!

And now, on with our irregularly-scheduled programming…

Because it's just been that kind of week. Many thoughts head empty would like to become one with the nearest sofa cushion except it's too hot lately for that, etc. I haven't even gotten around to last weekend's 天赐 episode yet, except for that absolutely feral 算你狠 performance (though to be fair, I have watched it… well, a lot more than once……)

Also, I do need to get my gif folder under control at some point, that pest is reaching almost 30GB at this point because I refuse to delete my PSDs. (Fortunately I do have the storage to spare on my laptop, but still.)

In the meantime, various bits and bobs from earlier this week:

Re-bearified version of the banner I made for the 520 reverse exchange at [community profile] sid_guardian, because Bears.

GIF of Shen Wei showing a sketch of a bear over video call, with the flashing subtitle text: hashtag BEARS in all caps

Zhou Shen gifset ft. blue gradient and overlays for week 3 of the March gif challenges – technically my first time Doing Colours On Purpose, and of course I had to make my own life difficult by trying to coherently combine gifs from 5 wildly-different-colouring videos. See comparison under the cut )

I don't often do draft versions of gifs these days, short of extremely elaborate layouts (…so basically that CM intro set), but it was called for in this case. (Tangentially, a fun read on the topic of white balance and colouring!)

On-the-commute-home-phonefic (or the opening three paragraphs thereof) owing to discussions on the Guardian server, which I have since realised could fill the DCU square on my bingo card if I could trap writing!brain back long enough to finish it out:

snippet: aw, shen wei, no )

presumenothing: (hxz)

(Which probably isn't going to be a long list at all, realistically speaking, but hey.)

February

  • The Thursday Murder Club, Richard Osman: Would be a better read if not for the too-sardonic tone? I appreciate sarcasm a fair bit more than the average person but this felt overdone, and I'm not sure if there was sufficient levels of cunning to back up some of the conceits of the case itself. Still, enjoyable enough for an afternoon!
  • Project Hail Mary, Andy Weir: The ending felt a little rushed, and the technobabble occasionally a little excessive relativity do be a pain though but otherwise I definitely enjoyed this more than I expected to going in. vague spoilers? )

March

  • Illuminae, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff: Fun trivia – picked this up by way of seeing a post the Taiwanese translator (who also did Murderbot) wrote about it, because I absolutely love mixed-media storytelling. Admittedly the actual narrative itself isn't 100% up my alley, but compelling enough in combination with the format. May poke around the sequels, we'll see…
presumenothing: (shen wei)

Except that I have trouble dialing things down to speed, but anyway – put together a quick guide to doing text wipes (or more generally keyframe animations) in gifs as requested by an anon-in-law!

animated text on a dark blue-green background. initial text: 'the only thing better than cats' in yellow. this is wiped away to be replaced by new text: 'is even more cats' in light blue. a small white triangle below the text moves along with the wipe, like a cursor
( Tutorial on Tumblr )

Also, a very non-exhaustive list of gifs I've applied this to (it's a lot).

presumenothing: (tmea)

Mandatory note: I'm not actually caught up… nor am I not not caught up either, by dint of the extremely slapdash way in which I listen to Night Vale episodes these days (or, as I put to [personal profile] cortue, the non-scientific method of hopping backwards a couple episodes from the present until I hit upon a sufficiently intriguing one to start from).

I am vaguely aware of the ongoing arc though! And since it's conveniently February i.e. the start of this year's run, that's an easy pick for a starting point at least.

  • 201 - The Delivery Man: Pretty classic standalone episode! With a peppering of the Bigger Plot, which I didn't fully absorb (having listened to it while working) and am therefore now reading the transcript for. Favourite quote: spoilers )

  • 202 - The Day After the Day: The beloved (literal) return of Valentine's Day… and a strangely familiar audio puzzle LOL. Basically all fun segments today, which is great. Also, nice weather vibes! With a smiley face. Favourite quote: spoilers + ETA from director's notes )

  • 203 – The Kareem Nazari Show: Subheading, the triumphant return of the Michigan brick joke. No Cecil, but I do enjoy a good fourth-wall take on Night Vale weirdness! Nice chill weather! And also what felt like a sort-of-acknowledgement of what it means to keep engaging in fandom even as the world does its level best to fall down around us. Favourite quote: spoilers )

Just putting some titles down before I inevitably again catch a bout of amnesia about anything that has ever happened in the year-to-date.

May come back and add some thoughts later, but given that quite a few of these fall under "peripherally watched as a function of my parents' Netflix-ing", I don't necessarily have much opinions about them (doubly so for the italicised ones). List is in rough chronological start order, and yes there's basically next-to-no English shows on this.

tv

  • 居酒屋ぼったくり / Izakaya Bottakuri (JP)
  • Heartland (EN, S13-S14)
  • 开端 / Reset (CN, still only EP1)
  • 一千個晚安 / A Thousand Goodnights (TW)
  • 时光音乐会 / Time Concert (CN, EP1)
  • リーガルV~元弁護士・小鳥遊翔子~ / Legal V (JP)
  • 緊急取調室 / Kintori (JP, S1-S3): possibly my favourite of the peripherally-watched things?
  • BG〜身辺警護人〜 (JP, S1)
  • 天赐的声音 / The Treasured Voice (CN, S3 in progress): EP1 log

movies

  • 夏への扉 キミのいる未来へ / The Door Into Summer (JP)
  • 白蛇2:青蛇劫起 / Green Snake (CN)

Me, seeing this week's gif challenge on composition: Oh, I've got to make this harder before my brain will take me up on The Shiny.

Also me, an untold storm of increasingly-unhinged ideas later: Did I forget about my bingo card? I forgot about my bingo card. Who put me in charge of my life decisions and why was that a dubious choice.

Fortunately, I finally recalled its existence (complete sidetrack: here's how it's going, by the way, and I could have a line if I'd just finish that ZYL-vs-YZ gifset already) along with the entirely coincidental "Suits" square at [personal profile] elenothar's very helpful egging-on-ery. And thus!

*tinny fanfare noise*

Rectangular layout with 3 gifs of Shen Wei in a double-breasted blue suit. 1: High angle shot of him walking forward, text: “The Wedding Crasher”. 2: Close-up of him looking offscreen in silent panic, text: “No tie (it’s not like it’s his disaster wedding)”. 3: Materialising his blade in the SID and storming towards Zhu Jiu, text: “Accessories: one full can of whoop ass”.
( Gifset on Tumblr )

Two-piece appreciation of Shen Wei's very nice three-piece wardrobe! Heavily inspired by [tumblr.com profile] canary3d-obsessed's iconic Shen Wei Serving Lewks posts (also available to read on AO3). Along with So Much gratuitous text animation and geometry especially on the second one, because if nothing else what you should know about me is that I really like fancy effects. Even if they make my laptop throw a minor fans-on-overdrive hissy fit exporting them. 10/10 worth it though.

presumenothing: (Default)

…yes, I know it's entirely not at all Saturday yet, but I need some kind of motivation to get through the remaining half day of work and right now that's thinking about this absolutely galaxy-brained edit from last year's 潮拜72小時 performance:

Performance photo of Chinese singer Zhou Shen, with rotating triangle around him and his name animated above
( GIF + textless static version on Tumblr )

Original pic for comparison under cut )

because I do love my before/after contrasts. Also, the neon effect itself was borrowed from this photo-editing tutorial, but I think combining it with animation was pretty rad of me!

This goes in a phone-wallpaper set with this rehearsal one (original pic) which may look familiar if you've seen me on Discord, and similarly the neon edit in my icon here and on Tumblr (original pic) though I didn't do a full-size edit of this one. Be the thematically-matching icons I want to see in the world XD

So, to put the decision after the fact, I've decided that biweekly (that's once every two weeks, thanks for nothing, English) is a good frequency for these posts, with some leeway to do mini-posts on the off weeks if anything too-interesting crops up before then.

…which should also obviously be titled Satur-Sun-day instead, but hey, no one has ever accused me of having any good sense of time!

ALSO: HAPPY 2-YEAR ANNIVERSARY TO THE ICONIC PERFORMANCE THAT IS Baby До свидания!! Opera, pop, Chinese, Russian… what can't he do.

presumenothing: (beret)

I almost added a question mark to the title, because my track record for finishing even music-oriented variety shows (and even with Zhou Shen included, but that goes without saying) is, uh. Not too great! But anyway. Here goes…

天赐的声音 aka The Treasured Voice S3: Full episode is here, though no English subs at time of writing. And of course, Zhou Shen's duet performance of Stefanie Sun's 克卜勒! Which translates as Kepler, for those keeping track at home, and therefore fits right in with his various other interstellar-themed collaborations. (See also: 她是黯淡星 with Muma, 星际列车 with Lang Lang & band, 末日飞船 with Tang Hanxiaono wait I'm supposed to save the Shenshen-rambling for the other post, right)

On the non-Zhou Shen front, I'm peripherally aware of quite a few names on this show, but the only ones whose performances I've specifically heard are Angela, Jike, and Xilinnayi, so this should be interesting!
