Undiluted Weilan fluff for [community profile] fan_flashworks (second entry so far!), and also the first fill for my Guardian bingo card.

Definitely inspired in part by CNY-related discussions with [personal profile] elenothar, and so further doubles as a happy Lunar New Year card to everyone celebrating! 新年快乐! 🧨

Challenge 15

In your own space, create your own challenge. Leave a comment to this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Borrowing the spirit of [personal profile] hogwartstoalexandria's Marked for Later challenge, but toned way down given work and various other commitments are all over the place right now…

The challenge: Every time I open AO3 (whether from a fic alert or just general site visits), I'll also check the "Is it later already?" section on the homepage and either immediately read or remove the 3 marked-for-later fics listed there.

Exception – for fics that I do want to read but are really way longer than I have time for right then, I get to leave it there and randomly pick another marked fic instead.

This won't exactly be fast-going, seeing as it's 3 fics each time against 500+ total on my list going back to 2016-ish, but quite a portion of these are probably for fandoms I'm no longer interested in so I probably won't end up reading them anyway. At least I'll know that I'm making some progress on whittling it down, and given we're probably returning to the office more often this year it'll conveniently fill in that commute time.

I've also limited it to "whenever I open AO3" rather than every day or some other schedule because I'm probably gonna be in the reading-things mood then anyway. If you've got a choice then rig the game for success, right?

(I also have a little sometimes-project on the side with my AO3 bookmarks where I'm going through older ones and quoting my favourite snippet of the fic in the notes, like what I do with my more recent bookmarks! Which helps me recall what I liked about each fic more easily than the title or summary, and seeing all the snippets together afterwards is also pretty fun… and also conclusive proof that I have a type for fics, I think, but that's probably obvious already.)

Challenge 13.

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, wild times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I've already mentioned the Murderbot server in a previous Snowflake post but they deserve another shoutout here – my first fic for the fandom got shared there and summoned a literal deluge of lovely comments within hours of posting. I recall sitting there just going "??!?!?!???!????!!" internally at the number of email notifications in an extremely flattered-if-mystified way. 10/10 amazing reception, would experience again.

I often say I've been very lucky in my fandom experience because while I don't really get lots of engagement (partly expected given what I usually write, i.e. short gen fic with no popular ships in sight, if you consider that niche) I've also never had bad experiences firsthand, and what interactions do happen are often fun as hell.

Other particular favourites aside from the above: every time people go capital-letter-swearing at me in reblog tags while I cackle like a poorly-casted witch, unorthodox but extremely heartwarming compliments in anonymous asks (quotes include "your writing is like. soup. good." and "but the marbles that make it out of YOUR pinball brain maze are fantastic"), and fanworks accidentally inspired by my own stuff (podfic(!!) of the Night Vale!FMA AU by [tumblr.com profile] angel-bazethiel, and this cinematic expansion of my MDZS timetravel au idea by [tumblr.com profile] brawltogethernow also originator of the very appropriate tag "#okay hold on i was trying to write YOU a tiny gift fic based on a tumblr post slow down"). Great times!

*sees a hanahaki au prompt over at 3SF*

*proceeds to have An Idea*

*but first: embarks on a half-hour mental digression of what my preferred Chinese term for hanahaki would be*

Obviously a completely expected and normal chain of events.

Anyway. In a very-direct translation of 花吐き病, the accepted terms appear to be 花吐病 or 花吐症 (per Fanlore and Baidu respectively) and a cursory search also turns up the pinyin in occasional English usage.

Which is… fine, I guess, except the word order makes no intuitive sense in Chinese and also where's the poetry of it? Even literal VD gets the more graceful-sounding 花柳病, never mind that I'm not gonna look up why that is because medical conditions are PG content for me.

So have my non-rigorously-considered proposals for alternatives:

  • 花疾 as a slightly-archaic parallel to 心疾 (which appropriately enough covers both worry-induced ailments and actual heart disease). 花炎 would be an option except I don't think there's inflammation involved?
  • 落花病 as the more-modern term – "fallen flower" at least sounds better to me than flower vomit while also being appropriately evocative. Also used as 落花症, because vocab-wise 病 generally refers to the illness itself while 症 is more symptoms/presentation, but both seem applicable in this case. Doubly appropriate because I just got reminded while searching that 落花有意,流水无情 is essentially poetic imagery for unrequited love. So yeah.
  • 花痴 already exists as a term for someone easily infatuated with attractive people, but it'd be wasted if you didn't borrow it as slang for people with hanahaki (cue in-universe discourse™️ about how this term is #problematic and oversimplifes the condition, etc).

…and that's all so maybe now my hamster brain will allow me to write the remaining 1.8 sentences of that fic. Roundabout much?

ETA: Here is the fic! All three sentences of it. Also fun: come discuss the horrors of Dixing-esque hanahaki in the comments of this post.

Challenge #11

In your own space, Interact with someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Well that's one I can mark finished already :P I've definitely done More Interaction™️ here in the past two weeks since arriving to DW compared to my usual month across… everywhere else added together?

So I guess this is mostly a note to say hi (again!) to everyone I've met so far both in Guardian and general fandom, plus a very enthusiastic thanks for all the A++ comments on my gif post for Snowflake and also me losing my marbles over Zhou Shen because I <3 him a normal amount. (And may or may not be planning to do another instalment of that later today – what else are weekends for, right?)

Also a shoutout to everyone over at [community profile] guardian_learning for providing excuses to think far too much about language than is strictly necessary or reasonable. Consider this an open invite for anyone learning Mandarin to come throw your language cooties at me whenever (with the caveat that I'm definitely not Mainland-standard on vocab or grammar but still good enough overall), which will hopefully tempt my brain back into semi-formal Japanese learning at some point.

Or drop a track you're listening or most recently listened to! That's Mika's Elle me dit for me:

I fell into playing Project Sekai (technically a Vocaloid-inspired rhythm game, though calling it that doesn't do justice to its depth of story) for quite a while last year, and while I've mostly been tempted away by other shiny things, the current event does feature my fave set of characters… so here I am again! Figured I'd log my thoughts here along the way because why not.

I was gonna rec a fic and then I remembered this Yuri on Ice fanvid by [youtube.com profile] ThePteryx / [tumblr.com profile] ThePteryx, aka possibly the single most beautiful anime fanvid (do we still call them AMV these days? I forget) I have ever seen:

Challenge #8

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Learning how to gif! With extra proud-ness given that I (a) started from basically 0 knowledge of Photoshop save whatever remnants I remember from using GIMP like a decade ago, (b) generally don't consider myself as being any good with colours, and (c) managed to pull off pretty much every moderate-to-very unhinged gif idea I had, including some animations done from scratch.

Probably a whole 90% possibly more of everything I made was Zhou Shen because I'm single-minded like that (full gallery here!), with the rest scattered across various fandoms, starting with a particular SecUnit-favoured show…

In which I make full use of my constitutional inability to shut up about Zhou Shen, because why not. He deserves it!

And also because keeping up with everything he's doing is an entire (fun) task in itself these days, which I rarely set aside time for even though he's literally a joy to see onscreen. Plus maybe I'd like to take the chance to blatantly show off my gifs here too, can you blame me for that?

Anyway, here goes…

In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom!) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

  • The Murderbot Discord server! Lots of excellent people and discussions, not to mention robot emotes hahaha romotes – what's there not to love? (And not in a weird way, of course.)
  • The Zhou Shen fanclub Twitter aka one-stop shop for keeping up with the (many, many) updates of new songs and other stuff, or alternatively the infohub Weibo for even more comprehensive updates. (I would also like to say "the Zhou Shen tag on Tumblr" because we do have a cozy little appreciation club ongoing there, but also I make up like half of the recent posts at any given time lol sorry guys!!)
  • Haven't actually used this one yet, but this Weilan by runtime guide for each Guardian episode, which I foresee coming in handy in rewatches or just to find a specific scene.

Challenge #6

In your own space, Create something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Decided to put those subscriptions to fic prompt comms to use by doing a Guardian drabble for [community profile] 100words, linked below!

A lot of what I write is in the several-hundred-words range by default, but it's been a long while since I really restricted myself to exactly 100 words so this was a nice challenge. I'm definitely out of practice at sticking to a particular word count – this idea kept wanting to expand into the 200-word range even while I was beating it down with a mallet. Behave, you gremlin.

(Admittedly I also had a more recent run of writing one-tweet-length (i.e. 280 character) fics during my stint in The Promised Neverland fandom, but I'd argue writing that sort of micro-fic is its own kind of beast entirely.

And come to think of it, the last time I did drabbles regularly was on [livejournal.com profile] 100wordstories when I was exploring around LJ, so it's nice to come full circle I guess? Definitely an instructive experience, judging by how I do semi-often get comments about how much story and/or worldbuilding I've managed to cram into the little amount of fic real estate I use.)

( fic: look at your life, zhao yunlan, look at your choices )
